Continuing on at Art Basel...Merlin Carpenter's painting "Die Collector Scum" takes a swipe at the overheated art market. Reportedly it was sold on the first day of the show.
Jeffrey Deitch Projects showed a painting by Kurt Kauper (Bobby #3) in front of Dzine's pimped up bike. Kurt Kauper's painting is a nude portrait of Bobby Orr, the famous hockey player for the Boston Bruins in the artist's home town. It is the artist's own fantasy at work here, imagining a masculine athlete in the buff.
The gallery also showed a small sculpture by Keith Haring. It is a great example of his iconic Pop figures that are graphic abstractions.
Some visitors at the show were as interesting looking as the art itself.
Talking about interesting, the sculpture shown below was pretty nifty. A "collage" of penises cast a shadow of 2 male profiles with a spotlight illuminating the piece. Can anyone help with the name of the artist, and the gallery that showed it? I forgot to write this one down.
