Victoria Miro Gallery in London showed giant
sculptures and paintings by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama this summer. The artwork is covered in polka dots and a mesh net pattern - as seen on the flower pot below.
Kusama suffered from a life-long struggle with mental illness. She had severe obsessive thoughts
since childhood, and experienced hallucinations with visions of dots, nets and flowers that covered
her and everything around her.
In her work she expresses the universe covered by these patterns. For her polka dots symbolize the sun and the moon, and hence a way to infinity.
